We had the honour of working on the oldest railway buildings in the world as part of the rejuvenation of the railway museum within Darlington. Adjacent the lines of the infamous Stockton to Darlington railway, the first passenger railways system in the world, a mix of buildings and facilities have been blended to provide a family filled day out.
BGP was responsible for all civil and structural works within the project which consisted of:
- The goods shed – Refurbishment – Reception, gift shop, toilet block and cafe
- Carriageworks – Refurbishment – Exhibition space and archive storage
- Head of Steam – Refurbishment – Original railway station modified and extended to provide museum space.
- Virtual Reality Pod – New Build – Stand alone structure wrapped in Corten providing housing for an immersive virtual reality ride of the original Locomotion No. 1.
- A1 Shed – New Build – Purpose built engine shed for A1SLT to continue building steam engines.
- Link Bridge & Access Tower – New Build – A new pedestrian bridge spanning the live railway beneath which provides access to a viewing gallery inside the A1 shed. Fully DDA compliant with both stair and lift access.
- 1861 Shed – Refurbishment – A split unit for tenants currently occupied by The Darlington Railway Preservation Society.
- Ancillary Blocks & Childrens playground nestled amongst existing trees.
